On New Years Day (American) we went to Muriwai Beach and Gannet Colony. What a beautiful place. Muriwai Beach is a spectacular expanse of black sandy beaches and pounding surf.
As if that was not enough, we also learned about the Gannet Bird Colony.

The Gannets come to these rocks and lay their eggs about October. After the eggs hatch and the birds get strong enough they head to Australia about February - March. It was very interesting to watch them. They appear to take turns minding the nest.
There was lots of beach as well as the gannet colony. Gary went swimming in the ocean and ventured into some of the caves. The water kept flowing in and out of these caves. There were three of them there together. When the tide comes in the caves are not accessable.

On the way home we stopped and got fresh strawberry ice cream. There was a cactus tree in bloom.
